Recently, CNN.com published an opinion/editorial piece written by Elliot Fineman, of the National Gun Victims Action Council (NGVAC), whose son, Michael, was murdered on December 30, 2006, by a twice-institutionalized mentally ill individual. Mr. Fineman suggested Obama declare a National State of Emergency for the “Gun Violence Epidemic.” In other words, Mr. Fineman wants martial law to be established throughout the nation to stem gun violence through dictatorial decree by the man in the Oval Office.
What is it these days with supposedly sane, free citizens of this nation calling for dictatorial, tyrannical, despotic rule of one man — in particular, Barack Hussein Obama Soetoro Soebarkah who is a criminal, liar, traitor and mentally ill? It is enough to cause volcanoes to erupt. Fortunately, Mt. Hamner is stable for now. However, monitors indicate pressure is building.
The loss of a child is not something that I can comprehend because I have not experienced it. Losing a child has to be the worst nightmare of any parent. I could not imagine life without mine. Thinking about how other parents have continued living after losing a child generates great respect for their strength and ability to cope. I cannot say how I would react or what I would do if faced with the same situation. However, one thing that I know I would not do is punish an entire society for the actions of one criminal.
There are many who have suffered a loss similar to Mr. Fineman. Their sons and daughters served our nation proudly and courageously in the military and died doing so. It would not be a far stretch to say many parents who lost their children in service to our nation believed some of those conflicts senseless and unnecessary. Other parents have lost their children to disease, car accidents, medication side effects, drug overdoses, drowning, and complications of medical procedures. All of them may consider their loss senseless as well. Mr. Fineman’s loss is no greater or lesser than any other parent who has lost a child. Yet, he has the luxury of CNN.com featuring his opinion piece calling for a tyrannical, despotic action by one man.
Where are the opinion pieces of other parents who lost their children in military service to this nation in what many would call “senseless” conflicts and occupations?
While many empathize with his situation and his desire to stop others from having to experience a loss like his, his suggestion for Soetoro to enact a national state of emergency for the purpose of gun control/confiscation are out of proportion and contrary to the Constitution of the united States of America. Mr. Fineman is reacting out of unresolved grief. Because of the extreme nature of the measures he suggests, his progression through the grief process has stalled; his unresolved grief is producing an over-heightened sense of urgency where none exists. No action that can be taken will erase the hurt of losing a child; neither will punishing an entire society based on the unlawful actions of one individual.
The Constitution establishes and limits our government from infringing on the citizens in many ways, not only where firearms are concerned. The establishment of a national state of emergency for the supposed “gun violence epidemic” amounts to the declaration of martial law, which could be considered a hostile gesture against a citizenry.
